"As we go to site-based management," said Doris Dawson, the school system's personnel director, "we're not going to see the exact same schedules at all of our schools."
For instance, there will be only one system-wide teacher workday on Jan. 24, 1994.
The other 19 workdays will be scheduled at each school for teachers at that school only.
Some of the schools will have teachers come in an hour early for their workday activities, rather than setting aside separate days.
Parent-teacher conferences also will be scheduled separately at each school, Dawson said.
This might be confusing to some parents, but it also might work to the advantage of parents who have children at different schools because they would not have all of their conferences scheduled at the same time.
The idea behind the site-based management is that educators at the various schools know their needs and goals better than a central administrative staff would know them.
Some of the county educators will be attending a management academy at Pulaski County High School's vocational department on Wednesday and Thursday to define Total Quality Management for their schools and to look at strategies that would enhance collaboration.
One of the speakers will be Christopher Corallo, the principal of Ferrum Elementary School in Franklin County, where Total Quality Management is being carried out.
