TO THEM IT WILL ALWAYS BE THE TUNNEL OF LOVE

Two tunnel workers planned to tie the knot today atop the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel.

Alan LaFrance, who is lead patroller of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, and Brenda Sadler, a patroller in the Monitor-Merrimac, will wed in the tunnel's training room overlooking the bridge and the water.

"It kind of started out as a joke, getting married in the tunnel," LaFrance said. "After the eighth or ninth time she brought it up on different days, I asked about it."

The Hampton couple's employer, the Virginia Department of Transportation, nixed the idea of a wedding in the dark heart of the tube. But officials agreed to nuptials that wouldn't tie up traffic.

A minister will preside over an otherwise traditional ceremony, with the bride and groom wearing formal attire rather than orange jumpsuits.

"I wear'em enough," LaFrance said. - Associated Press
