NAMES & CHANGES

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s recent coal marketing department reorganization includes the promotion of MARK BOWER to director of coal marketing development, CHRIS NUCKOLS to manager of international coal marketing, CONNIE BROCKENBROUGH-VAUGHN to manager of business development, concentrating on coal-consuming customers, and ALAN JULIAN, market manager of coal resources focusing on coal-producing customers.

Also promoted in the railroad's coal pricing department were TOM BAYRER as director, coal pricing; SHARON LONDON, who succeeds Bayrer as pricing manager-North; RUDY METZ, product manager; and DEBBIE BEVERLY, who moved from Bluefield, W.Va., to Roanoke as contract administrator.

The changes were intended to make Norfolk Southern more responsive to its coal customers, the company said.

ARCHITECTURE

Motley & Associates recently hired GEFFREY B. MILLER, DAVID L. MCFARLAND, and DOUGLAS H. VIEHMAN.

Miller is accounting manager and was affiliated with Gardner-Denver Mining & Construction's former Roanoke operation and General Electric Co. McFarland, who formerly operated his own cost-estimating practice, will oversee Motley's quality control and provide estimating services during the design of projects. Viehman, who was part of a family-owned business, is manager of construction administration.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Virginia Tech's public service programs office has hired CHARLOTTE A. REED as economic development specialist in tourism. Reed, former coordinator for the university's Economic Development Assistance Center, will provide training and workshops for communities interested in tourism development.

Reed's former position has been filled by CATHERINE B. GREGORY, previously Southeast regional sales manager for The Homestead in Hot Springs.

Virginia Western Community College business Professor EDWARD G. MAGRUDER has retired after more than 25 years with the college.

COMMUNICATIONS

Contel Cellular of Roanoke has added to its staff DAVID A. CALDWELL, former sales manager for The Beeper Co., and STEPHEN E. WEAVER, former regional marketing consultant for the Outer Banks Beach Club. They will be joining TERI PETERS, who has been named the regional governmental specialist for Contel Cellular, and JON KAUFMAN, who previously was a retail sales representative for the Roanoke Times & World-News.

Dee CAPPS has been named office administrator for CCS Data Station in Christiansburg. She formerly worked for Green Memorial Hospital in Ohio and Modern Technologies Corp.

COMPUTER SERVICES

\ ROBERT N. TURCOTTE has joined Entre Computer Center as a senior systems consultant. He previously was a vice president with Data Systems Consulting.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

Premier Bankshares Corp. has hired DAVID M. VIAR as executive vice president of its subsidiary, Premier Bank Services. Viar, who formerly worked for Dominion Bankshares Corp., will help formulate investment strategy for Premier's member banks and will offer investment services to community banks.

Scott & Stringfellow Inc. said TIMOTHY ALAN CORDLE has joined its Roanoke office as an investment broker. He was previously employed as a product engineering supervisor for Hercules Inc. in Radford.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT

Carter Machinery Co. has appointed FRED BALTHIS of Wise area sales manager for the company's coalfield region. He is responsible for sales of new and used machines in Norton, Oakwood and Abingdon, and in Bluefield andPineville, W.Va. He will be based at the Carter facility in Norton.

LAW

G. TRIGG COPENHAVER, former chief financial officer, secretary and treasurer of Valleydale Packers Inc., has been named executive director of Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove. Copenhaver succeeds R. MITCHEL RATLIFF SR., who retired from the law firm. Copenhaver also was president and general manager of Johnson Foods Inc. and senior vice president of finance of Neuhoff Farms Inc., both affiliates of Valleydale. Before that he was a certified public accountant for Price Waterhouse in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Memphis, Tenn.

MANUFACTURING

Directors of Bassett Furniture Industries have elected PAUL FULTON and\ DR. PETER W. BROWN as board members. Fulton is a director of Sara Lee Corp., where he was president until June. In December he will become dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Brown, an oncologist and general surgeon, is a partner in Virginia Surgical Associates of Richmond. He was chairman of the board of directors of the Richmond Metropolitan Hospital from 1988 to 1992 and now serves as a member of its board of trustees.

MEDICINE

DR. BRET BOLTON has become a partner with Emergency Room Associates. Board-certified in emergency medicine, he practices at Roanoke Memorial and Community hospitals.

Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center has named JAMES M. SHOLES as administrator and chief executive officer. Prior to joining the psychiatric center, Sholes was administrator and chief executive officer of HCA River Park Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

TRANSPORTATION

JAMES S. GIVENS has been named secondary roads division engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation in Richmond. The 28-year veteran of the department also will manage the industrial and recreational access road program.
