FRIDAY WRECKS PROVE DEADLY FOR 2 DRIVERS

Two people died in separate highway accidents in Western Virginia on Friday.

Helen Woolfolk Royal, 70, of Lynchburg was heading north on U.S. 221 near Norwood in eastern Bedford County when a southbound pickup truck crossed the center of the road and struck her car head-on, state police reported.

Royal died at the scene of the 8:54 p.m. accident. The name and condition of the driver of the truck were not available.

Earlier Friday, Shannon Treymane Johnson, 17, of Ivanhoe was fatally injured when his pickup truck ran off the road and overturned near Porters Crossroads - the intersection of Virginia 94 and Virginia 619 - in Wythe County.

The truck Johnson was driving rounded a curve at an excessive speed, ran off the right side of the road, overturned three times and struck a tree, throwing Johnson from the vehicle, state police said. The accident occurred at 5 p.m.

He died at 7:33 p.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Trooper L.F. Valley said Kyle Cregger, a passenger in the truck, was uninjured.
