Four drivers - Randy Smith, Dicky Wilson, Tim McGuire and Dudley Lawhorn - led portions of the 100-lap feature race of the W.Q. Overton/Dr. Pepper 300. But Lawhorn, the track points leader, survived an early collision and took advantage of opportune caution flags to win his first race since the July 4 weekend.
The victory was the Rustburg driver's fifth of the year and tied him with Rick Sigmon for the season lead in that category.
Smith, who started on the outside of the front row, led the first 41 laps until an oil leak sent him to the pits. Pole-sitter Wilson then moved into first, but developed a flat tire on the next lap. McGuire led until lap 74, when Lawhorn passed him.
McGuire and Wilson finished second and third, respectively. Harvey Harrison placed fourth, and Ronnie Newman was fifth.
In other races Saturday night:
The Mini Stocks were featured in the 50-lap opener. Although the distance was double the usual for the cars, the results were familiar. Steve Lynch, the points leader, overtook pole-sitter John Hall on lap 46 and went on to the victory.
Hall finished second, moving him past Tommy Dean into second place in the points race. Steve Lam was third.
In the Street Stock competition, Lonnie Foley won his first race of the year. Foley collected a $200 bounty for unseating Jimmy Mullins, who won the previous four weeks. Mullins placed third Saturday night, behind Foley and Hank Turman.
Mike Owens, the 1992 Pure Stock points champion, rallied in the final 30 yards to nose out current points leader R.W. Lawhorn and win their race. Leon Moles finished third.
The spindle on the right front wheel of Lawhorn's Monte Carlo broke on the final turn of the last lap. Owens seized the opportunity to record his first victory of the season.
Gary Clifton won for the second consecutive week in the Rookie division. Clifton moved into third place in the points competition, two ahead of Jimmy Wilson, who finished second Saturday night. Josh Ingram was third.
