The Bucs, limited to six hits and one walk in the game, manufactured the winning run in the 11th.
Alan Purdy was hit by reliever Leo Ramirez (0-1) and took second on Marcus Hanel's sacrifice. After Purdy held at second on a groundout by Joe Ronca, Ramirez walked Jeff Conger. A bloop single to right field by Kevin Polcovich brought in the winning run.
"That was a sidearm slide that had gotten me all those strikeouts," said Ramirez, who fanned three in 3 1/3 innings. "I made a hell of a pitch and he should never have gotten a bat on it. It's pretty frustrating."
Durham's extra-innings frustrations continued with the club's 12th loss in 13 games.
"That was a good ballgame and you hate to lose one like that," said manager Leon Roberts, whose Bulls stranded 14 runners. We had our chances and some great situations. It's tough when you lose on a bloop single on an 0-2 pitch like that."
Salem (20-31) scored its first run in the third inning. Purdy hit the first of his two doubles to left and took third on the first sacrifice by Hanel. He scored on Conger's two-out single to right.
Durham (22-29) tied it in the bottom of the ninth as the Bucs' bullpen failed to preserve a shutout for starter Michel Laplante, who held the Bulls to five hits and one walk in 6 innings.
The rally started when Juan Williams led off with a single and took second an error by Hanel. Joe Ayrault tied it with a one-out double to right.
Dennis Konuszewski (3-10) picked up the victory. Salem's fifth pitcher gave up one hit and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Troy Mooney pitched the ninth to record his first save.
The game drew a sellout crowd of 6,312, the second largest in the history of Durham Athletic Park. The historic stadium will be replaced with a new facility next season.
In today's series finale, the Bucs will send Eric Parkinson (1-5) to the mound against the Bulls' Jerry Koller (8-7) in a 7:30 p.m. game. \
