TECH CLOSES FOOTBALL PRACTICES TO THE PUBLIC

Virginia Tech's preseason football practices will be closed to the public, coach Frank Beamer said Monday.

"It is important for our players to stay focused because we have so much to accomplish in a short period of time," Beamer said. He also noted that Tech is practicing a lot of new offensive and defensive schemes that he doesn't want to become public knowledge.

Tech opens play Sept. 4 against Bowling Green at 4 p.m. at Lane Stadium.

\ Dave Stanley and Jamie McElwee fired 78s on Monday to earn medalist honors and lead Bath County to a high school golf victory over Highland. The Chargers totaled 328 and the Rams 378 at the Lower Cascades Course in Hot Springs.

\ Heritage totaled 345 and edged Jefferson Forest by one stroke to win golf match Monday at Hanging Rock Golf Club. Salem was third with a 360 total on the par-73 course.

Chris Davis of Heritage and Forest's Matt Thornton shot 81 and shared medalist honors.
