R&B Telephone ends discount service

Roanoke & Botetourt Telephone Co., saying it was losing money on a discounted long-distance service, has eliminated it effective Friday.

Vice President Mike Layman said the company found that an insufficient number of daytime customers were using the service, which began in May. The company had calculated it would need up to 30 percent of its daytime long-distance market to earn a profit.

Layman said the company plans to offer several long-distance services in March, including discount plans for AT&T, MCI and Sprint. - Staff report

\ Earnings . . .

\ Krisch American Inns Inc. of Roanoke said Monday it lost $17,117 in the second quarter and $31,784, or a penny per share, for the six months. The hotel company said comparisons cannot be made with corresponding periods last year because the company disposed of all of its domestic hotels in 1992.

Krisch said it had no revenue for the first six months because it is not an operating company. It had only legal, recording and other expenses.

The company's only asset is a 49 percent interest in a $52.5 million resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
