BIOLOGICAL MONITORING INC., an environmental consulting firm in Blacksburg, has been awarded a Small Business Innovative Research grant from the National Science Foundation.

Money will be used for research on the firm's Bio-Sensor, a water-quality monitoring system.

Brian H. Smith, the Blacksburg investment representative for \ EDWARD D. JONES & CO., said the firm has begun its search for winners of the non-profit innovation and excellence award.

The honor recognizes outstanding programs and events sponsored by non-profit agencies.

It is open to all organizations with a 501(c)(3) designation. Applications may be obtained at the office at 2005 S. Main St.

\ WARM HEARTH RETIREMENT VILLAGE has broken ground for nine new town homes to complete its Oakland Square neighborhood, which will have 28 homes.

Plans for 30 more townhomes will be addressed after completion of Warm Hearth's campaign to build a comprehensive long-term and specialized health-care campus.

\ CUSTOM CATERING CENTER on Patrick Henry Drive in Blacksburg has been honored by the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce.

A family-run operation owned by Larry and Charlotte Linkous, Custom Catering has been in business for 16 years.

\ THE NATIONAL BANK OF BLACKSBURG has reported record earnings of $1.2 million for the first half of 1993.

Total assets were $180.3 million and the capital base grew 10.9 percent from the 1992 period.
