TRADING POST OWNER GETS 15 MONTHS

A federal judge sentenced the operator of a Clifton Forge trading post to 15 months in prison Monday for selling guns in exchange for cocaine.

U.S. District Judge Samuel Wilson also gave Oliver Franklin Reid Jr., a licensed firearms dealer, three years supervised probation and imposed a $5,000 fine.

Federal authorities arrested Reid, 46, in February after a four-month investigation. He was accused of violating laws regulating the sale of firearms by licensed dealers.

Reid pleaded guilty in June.

A former schoolteacher, Reid sold guns through his combination store, Oliver's Trading Co. and EZ Money Pawn Shop.

An investigation began after Virginia State Police received reports that Reid was illegally dealing in guns and was willing to trade guns for cocaine.

Reid was arrested after guns were illegally sold to informants posing as convicted felons and drug suppliers out of state. Reid offered to sell guns for cocaine and met undercover agents at a Covington motel, where he exchanged two handguns for one ounce of cocaine.
