BEDFORD MAN DROWNS IN RIVER

A Bedford County man drowned over the weekend while trying to swim across the James River near Big Island, authorities said.

Asa Lee Coleman, 47, of Big Island, was swimming Saturday with William Evans, 35, of Columbia, S.C.

State Game Warden M.L. Plasters said they tried to swim across the river, but Coleman drowned about halfway across.

The drowning occurred around 5 p.m. and searchers recovered Coleman's body about 7:30 p.m., Plasters said. Plasters said the drowning appeared to be accidental.
