Thomas S. "Pete" Haislip was selected from more than 90 applicants for the job, which has been vacant since January 1992.
Haislip, who will be paid $50,000 a year, reports to work Sept. 20.
Hodge said a committee appointed to review applicants was impressed with Haislip's ideas for improving Roanoke County parks. Haislip has a track record of recruiting community and business support for developing park facilities in Prince William County, Hodge said.
Hodge said he also would urge Haislip to work closely with recreation departments in Roanoke, Salem and Botetourt counties.
Since 1984, Haislip has worked for the Prince William County Parks Authority as a district parks supervisor and, most recently, as recreation superintendent. He is a graduate of Radford University.
He will direct a department with a $2 million budget, 50 employees, 41 parks and three recreation centers.
