Unilever, the Anglo-Dutch parent of Elizabeth Arden Co. of Roanoke, reported net earnings of $1.03 billion in the first half-year, up 3 percent from $999 million a year earlier. Earnings per share rose to $3.66 from $3.56. Sales and revenue were $22.46 billion, up 6 percent from $21.14 billion.
For the second quarter, net profit grew 4 percent to $588 million, or $2.10 a share, against year-earlier $566 million, or $2.02 a share. Revenue was $11.78 billion, up 6 percent from $11.16 billion.
\ Hanson PLC
Hanson PLC, the British owner of Grove Worldwide Co. in Salem and MW Manufacturing Inc. of Rocky Mount, on Tuesday reported nine-months profit before exceptional items of $1.095 billion on sales of $10.6 billion, compared with $1.141 billion on sales of $9,130 billion in the 1992 period. Pretax profit was $1.14 billion against $1,352 and earnings per ADR, reflecting the forecast return to a regular tax charge, were 86 cents against $1.17.
Profit for the quarter was $397 million on sales of $3.4 billion compared with $412 million on sales of $2.8 billion in the 1992 quarter. Pretax profit for the three months was $382 million against $605 million and earnings per ADR were 28 cents compared with 54 cents.
\ WLR Foods
WLR Foods Inc., a Hinton chicken and turkey processor operating a distribution center in Roanoke for its Cassco Ice & Cold Storage subsidiary, on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $6.1 million, or 56 cents per share, up from $3.7 million, or 37 cents per share, in the 1992 quarter. Net sales were $179.8 million, up 29 percent from $139.3 million.
For the fiscal year, net earnings were $14.6 million, or $1.40 per share, about 2 1/2 times the $5.9 million, or 52 cents per share, in 1992. Net sales were $616.7 million, up 19.9 percent from $514.5 million.
