Where do the candidates stand on abortion?
- Sandy Campbell, Roanoke.
\ Mary Sue Terry:
"I'm pro-choice and my opponent is multiple choice. I don't believe government has any place in this most personal and private of decisions a woman can make. I trust the women of Virginia, without government interference, to make this decision, and that constitutes a difference between my opponent and me."
\ George Allen:
"I have a position of reasonable moderation on abortion. I think Virginia's laws on abortion should be improved, primarily by requiring parents be involved if an unwed, minor daughter - that is, someone 17 and younger - is going to have an abortion, with a judicial bypass in the event the parents are abusive.
"My opponent, of course, is against that. I'm going to stand up for parents and think parents ought to be involved. Further I believe women, prior to having abortions, should be given full information, unbiased information, as to the impact, the risks and the alternatives and a 24-hour period of time to consider that information.
"I'm not for the taxpayer paying for abortion, other than in cases of rape, incest and gross fetal abnormality and where the life or physical health of the mother is being threatened."
