THE BOSS' TRUCK HAS COMPANY FROM JERSEY

Rural fire departments such as Paint Bank's typically rely on handouts and hand-me-downs.

In Paint Bank's case, that means not one, but two fire trucks donated from New Jersey companies.

Besides the Bruce Springsteen-related fire truck from Freehold, N.J., Paint Bank also recently received another pumper from Sea Bright, N.J.

The Sea Bright connection? That town's police chief recently retired to Paint Bank and arranged for his old town to donate a surplus truck.

That gives the Craig County community five trucks, one more than it needs, so Paint Bank plans to sell the Sea Bright truck - and make some much-needed money.

The buyer likely will be some fire company looking for a show truck, not a work truck. The last time Paint Bank sold an aging vehicle, says Fire Department President Ernie Palmer, the buyer was a Northern Virginia fire company, which fixed up the truck specifically to enter in parades.

"They spent more fixing up that truck that we have in our whole treasury," Palmer says.
