COUNCIL AGREES ON JUNKED-CAR CLEANUP

Town Council informally agreed Tuesday to allow a one-week cleanup on a lot containing a number of junked cars.

Walter Gravely had sought permission from Town Engineer John Hawley to crush and remove the vehicles at the Jr's Auto Sales lot at 414 Dora Highway as a one-time venture.

A permanent car salvage business is not allowed in the area under the town's zoning ordinance, but the ordinance says nothing about a temporary car-crushing measure to clean up an unsightly area.

Council members, meeting briefly Tuesday morning with their newly-hired water study consultants, had no objection to removing the junked cars as long as the former lot is cleaned up afterward. The town will monitor the operation.
