Downtown Pulaski business people have been working since mid-June toward an organization to attract more customers and tourists to the historic district, to work together on publicity and advertising, and to create an identifiable and desirable downtown-business image.
Ann Wallace, Sonny Gibson and Mary Goodwin presented proposed bylaws that were approved after some modifications. They call for a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and patron member representative to make up a board of directors.
The group decided that primary members (representing any retail business in the historic district) and associate members (professional offices or services in the district) would make up the organization's voting members.
Patron members would be governments, civic organizations, individuals and major employers outside the historic district wishing to support the organization. Paul Etzel, owner of the Renaissance restaurant where the meeting was held, suggested seeking representatives of some of larger employers from outlying malls or elsewhere for future meetings. If the alliance succeeds in bringing crowds downtown, Gibson said, those outlying foot stores, service stations and other businesses also would benefit.
The alliance is also checking into obtaining about $700 left in a bank several years ago, when a previous merchants' group dissolved to be used by any new organization with the same goals.
Nominating committees will be named to seek future officers, but those for the first year all will be nominated from the floor at the Aug. 31 meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Renaissance.
