MONTGOMERY MAN CHARGED WITH ATTACK ON DEPUTIES

A Montgomery County man has been charged with assaulting a deputy sheriff with a hunting arrow while he was being arrested in an assault on his wife.

Chief Deputy Dan Haga said deputies were sent Monday morning to the man's home on Mount Tabor Road after his father reported a domestic disturbance there.

Gregory D. Dreyer, 24, had come out of the house carrying a bow after officers had talked to him about an allegation he had choked his wife, Haga said. The man began walking away, but officers moved to take Dreyer into custody.

It was then, authorities allege, that Dreyer tried to stab the officers with a hunting arrow.

Sgt. Billy Wiatt was struck in the face by the arrow, sustaining a razor-like nick on the side of his face, Haga said. Deputy Billy Saunders was nearby but was not struck.

The Blacksburg Police Department assisted the county with the complaint, Haga said.

Dreyer was charged with maliciously wounding a police officer, attempted malicious wounding of a police officer, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer. He is being held in Montgomery County Jail without bond, Haga said.
