CHEMICAL SPILL NO THREAT TO ENVIRONMENT, OFFICIAL SAYS

A Floyd industry was awaiting the removal Tuesday of a tractor-trailer that spilled a highly flammable chemical that, according to officials, posed no threat to the environment.

A spokesman for Hollingsworth & Vose Co. said that the cleanup of the spill, which occurred Monday, was complete and that the material was sealed inside the trailer.

"Everything is contained," said Bruce Smith, the company's technical superintendent. "It's safe. We're just waiting to get the truck off the property."

Approximately 30 gallons of Latekoll - a material made mostly of isopropyl alcohol, ammonia and ethanol - spilled from a drum while being transported from New Jersey to the company in the Floyd County Industrial Park.

Local and state authorities handled initial cleanup of the spill, which was considered minor and contained to the trailer. Four Seasons, of Greensboro, N.C., completed the cleanup late Monday.

"It was very routine," said Smith. "One guy [on the cleanup crew] said it was one of their easier cleanups."

Smith said Four Seasons would get the material off the company's property as soon as a disposal site was secured.
