Coffee producers form price cartel

Kampala, Uganda - The world' major coffee-producing nations agreed Tuesday to form a cartel to raise sagging prices and said they would cut supplies beginning Oct. 1.

A communique issued by representatives from about two dozen African and Latin American countries meeting in the Ugandan capital said they will establish the new Association of Coffee Producing Countries.

The group will adopt a plan to hold back 20 percent of its exports to boost prices. - Associated Press \

U.S. coal production 5 percent behind '92

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production totaled 17.5 million tons in the week ending Aug. 7, up 5 percent from 16.6 million tons the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday. The U.S. coal industry produced 19 million tons in the same week last year.

Domestic coal production so far this year is 579 million tons, 5 percent behind 1992 production at this time. - Associated Press
