2 FROM NEW RIVER VALLEY TO VIE FOR TITLE OF MS. SENIOR VIRGINIA

Two New River Valley seniors are among the field of 13 candidates - ranging in age from 60 to 85 - vying for the title of MS. VIRGINIA SENIOR CITIZEN, Friday and Saturday in Roanoke.

Doris "Dot" Oliver of Christiansburg and Raylyn Terrell of Blacksburg will compete for the crown at the Airport Sheraton Inn.

Oliver will do a comedy routine and song, while Terrell will do clown dancing to a song she wrote and recorded.

The talent competition will be Friday and the grand finale Saturday, when the winner will be crowned. The program starts at 8 each evening.

The winner will get $300, a crown, of course, a trophy and air fare for two anywhere in the continental United States. She will represent Virginia in the national Ms. Senior Citizen competition in Joliet, Ill., in October.

Runners-up will get cash awards. Trophies will be awarded for outstanding talent and oldest contestant.

The pageant has other New River Valley connections, too:

The pageant committee chairwoman is Dotty Talbott of Dublin, who was Ms. National Senior Citizen in 1991. The pageant will be produced by Bob Thomas of B&B Media Inc. in Radford. Thomas, also news director for WRAD and WRIQ (CD Country 101.7), said he's a year shy of official senior status.

"It's wonderful to be showcasing senior citizens who are active and involved," he said. This pageant is a bit of a switch for Thomas, who has produced pageants for teens in the Midwest. "It's been interesting," he said.

Talbott has been picking away at all those little last-minute details necessary to make the pageant a success. "Everything just really feels good," she said.

The 1992 Ms. National Senior Citizen - Helen Wallace of Loudonville, N.Y. - also will be on hand for the occasion.

The committee hopes to get twice as many candidates for next year's pageant.

Tickets are $5 for Friday and $10 for Saturday, which includes a small evening reception; call Dotty Talbott at 674-5534 for tickets or ticket information.

You also can get tickets from the Airport Sheraton sales office; Salem Senior Center, 110 Union St.; Ogden Senior Center, 2932 Ogden Road S.W., Roanoke; or from the Convention and Visitors Bureau offices at 114 Market St., Roanoke. They also will be sold at the door.
