The Virginia Bar Association's Lawyers for Literacy committee has become involved with Family Reading Connections, a Bell Atlantic/ALA Family Literacy project. Lawyers from a number of Roanoke Valley firms have volunteered to work in the program.
Family Reading Connections is designed to promote reading as an enjoyable family activity. The project consists of nine six-week sessions at various public library locations. The first session began Tuesday at the Williamson Road branch of the Roanoke Library.
Family Reading Connections is a joint effort of Roanoke Public Library, Roanoke County Public Library, Literacy Volunteers of America Roanoke Valley, and C&P Telephone. To volunteer, call Nancy Francisco at 342-1624. Families who want to enroll in the program may call Sarah Robush at 981-2340.
Roanoke Rotarians install 80th president
Philip Wright, a financial consultant for Merrill Lynch, has been installed as the 80th president of the Rotary Club of Roanoke.
Other officers who recently were installed include: Joe M. Sears Jr., vice president; Robert C. Poole, secretary; James V. Thompson, treasurer; and Dixon D. Low, sergeant-at-arms.
Author to discuss business of writing
Cary Cohen, who has authored nine books dealing with business management and marketing, will present "Writing Can Be Fun and Profitable" at the Valley Writers' Sept. 2 meeting at the Elm Park Estates near Tanglewood.
Cohen, a consultant with a Richmond firm, also has had several articles published in trade and professional journals.

Women's distance run scheduled Aug. 28
The Women's Distance Festival 5K Run will be held Aug. 28 at 8:30 a.m.
The event, sponsored by the Star City Striders Running Club, is held annually to promote fitness and health for women in the Roanoke Valley.
Race-day registration is from 7 to 8 a.m. at the footbridge on Wiley Drive. Participants also may call 966-RUNN for an application.
State fraternal order honors area members
The Virginia State Association of the Order of DeMolay recently honored members from the Roanoke Valley chapter of the fraternal order.
Christopher L. Pendleton was elected state master councilor of the fraternal order and was the Flower Talk competition winner.
Matthew Ladenheim won the Ceremony of Lights competition, Jason Akers received the State Representative DeMolay award and John Critzer received a $1000 scholarship.
Pendleton, Critzer, Akers and Shep Critzer divided a $2600 scholarship.
The Order of DeMolay is an international fraternal order for young men ages 13 to 21. The local chapter is sponsored by the 22nd Masonic District.
Red Cross seeking volunteer teachers
The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers to teach health and safety classes in area elementary schools.
The Red Cross will provide training in classroom instruction and basic first-aid to all volunteers before giving classroom assignments.

School administrator changes announced
The Roanoke County School Board has named three people to new administrative positions.
Gary L. Basham, former assistant principal at Northside High School, was named supervisor of mathematics. David M. Wymer, former assistant principal at William Byrd High School, was named supervisor of social studies. Mike Sisler, former hall principal at Patrick Henry High School, was named assistant principal at Cave Spring High School.
Literacy Volunteers seek tutors for adults
The Literacy Volunteers of America is seeking volunteers to work in the Roanoke public schools' Adult Basic Education classroom.
Volunteers will be tutoring adults who are enrolled in adult basic-education classes.
Training will be provided for volunteers.

Red Cross announces new hours for donors
The Roanoke chapter of the American Red Cross has announced new, hours for donors.
The blood center, 325 Church Ave., will now be open on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.; and on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Area agency on aging announces new name
The board of directors of the League of Older Americans Inc. has announced that the agency will be known as LOA Area Agency on Aging effective immediately.
The location, mailing address and telephone number have not changed.
