NEW RIVER PEOPLE

JOSEPH R. HUNNINGS, the Montgomery County agricultural extension agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service and the contributor of the "Hoein' and Growin' " column in the Roanoke Times & World-News' New River Current, will be one of two agents in the state to receive an achievement award. Hunnings will be honored at the National Agricultural Extension Agents annual meeting and awards banquet in Baltimore this month.

\ GIRL SCOUT TROOP 629 of Blacksburg participated recently in a camping program aboard the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Charleston Harbor, S.C.

Girls who participated were Carmen Badinelli, Jennifer Braun, Sarah Brunner, Daniela Canaval, Ashley Chance, Elizabeth Guinn, Amanda Patrick, Katie Peters, Alicia Ranck, Rebecca Reasor, Laura Stromberg, Emily Whitlock and Kelly Wilson. Leaders are Jan Chance and Verlyn Stromberg.

The VIRGINIA SUNDANCERS is a new country-and-western dance club in Montgomery County. The club plans to promote country dancing by demonstrations at social events. Officers are Linda Dean, president; Linda Vaden, vice president; Lucy Cox, treasurer; Shelby Dickerson, secretary; Linda Fisher, program director and reporter. \ VIRGINIA ROUSE has been named the 1993 recipient of the Volunteer Services Award at Radford Community Hospital.

The August meeting of the SOUTHSIDE GARDEN CLUB was held at Mrs. Robert Cannell's home, with Mrs. James Moore as co-hostess. Members who won blue ribbons for artistic arrangements were Mrs. Walter O'Brien and Mrs. Jerald Robinson. Blue-ribbon winners in horticulture were Mrs. Donald Bloss, Mrs. Channell, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Fred Morris and Mrs. Robinson.

Radford artist Z.L. FENG took the $2,000 best-in-show award at the 22nd International Boston Mills Artfest near Cleveland, Ohio, for his watercolor "Pueblo Sun Chant."

His portrait "Zhow-Mah," which won a $1,000 best in show at the Georgia Watercolor Society National Exhibition, will be featured in an article titled "On the Watercolor Front" in the September issue of "The Artist's Magazine."

\ MEI SHU of Radford has won several awards for her watercolor and mixed-media work, including best in show, second and third places and merit awards at the 1993 Bath County Art Show in Hot Springs and at Collector's Choice, the Savannah National 1993, in Savannah, Ga.

\ DIRK H. GERATZ, a planner with the Blacksburg Planning Department, has received certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners, the professional arm of the American Planning Association.

\ AARON MULLINS, son of June and Donald Mullins of Blacksburg, earned the top award in public speaking at the 4-H State Congress convention. ROBIN GUYNN, daughter of Norma and Stephen Guynn of Blacksburg, won the top award in electric energy. NATHAN KYLE, son of Carolyn and Lawrence Kyle; HEIDI MEADOWS, daughter of Robert and Connie Meadows; and JOHN JOHNSON, son of John and Mary Ann Johnson, all of Blacksburg, are members of the Consumerama Team, which placed second at the convention. A dance act by ERIN PARKER, daughter of Bernice and Curtis Parker, and SARA SWEENEY, daughter of Butch and Eula Sweeney, both of Riner, took a second place. KENDRA KYLE of Blacksburg, daughter of Carolyn and Lawrence Kyle, was elected a 4-H ambassador.

\ BONNIE FRANKLIN of Christiansburg represented Virginia members at the Woodmen of the World, Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society's 42nd National Convention in Nashville, Tenn. The fraternal benefit society conducts community projects such as presentation of U.S. flags, equipment donations to hospitals, fire and rescue departments and assistance for senior and handicapped citizens and orphans.
