VACCINES PREVENT MANY DISEASES

Many childhood diseases, such as whooping cough, diphtheria, polio and measles are preventable with vaccines. Because available data suggests that fewer than 60 percent of children are current on shots, the U.S. Public Health Service has established the objective of having 90 percent of preschool children immunized before their second birthday by 2000.

In the New River Valley, the Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg is sponsoring a campaign whose theme is "All Their Shots While They're Tots." Local health departments can provide most recommended child immunizations without charge, and evening clinics are offered in some areas.

For details, call your local health department:

Giles County, 921-2891

Montgomery County, 382-6154

For more information on childhood immunizations, call Judy Williams in the New River Health District for the state at 831-5774.
