VMI LOSES TOP SCORER IN BASKETBALL

Sophomore forward Lawrence Gullette, the top returning scorer for VMI's basketball team, will miss the first four games of the upcoming season for academic reasons.

Gullette, from Auburn, Ala., averaged 7.8 points and was second on the team in rebounding with a 5.1 average as a freshman. He started 19 of 27 games.

In other college sports:

Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Dayton highlight the non-conference portion of VMI's 1993-94 basketball schedule.

The Keydets, who finished 5-22 last season, open with home games against Bluefield and Richmond.

Football player Bryant McMillian, a junior who was a candidate for starting fullback, has been suspended at VMI for a year because he did not meet the school's academic standards.

Also, sophomore halfback Jack Baker will sit out the season because of a knee injury suffered last year.

Add two more prominent names to the list of non-returnees to Washington and Lee's football team.

Graig Fantuzzi, a starting cornerback who was named W&L's Outstanding Freshman Athlete last year has opted not to play football this season. Fantuzzi was the top pitcher on the Generals' baseball team last year and has decided to concentrate on that sport.

Also, linebacker James Maberry, the Generals' leading tackler in 1992 with 106, left the team for personal reasons, said coach Gary Fallon.
