Marine Corps Col. Wesley L. Fox assumed his new post at Tech this month and will advise the operations of the Cadet Regiment's 1st Battalion.
Fox, a native of Leesburg, served 43 years in the Marine Corps, including 16 years in enlisted grade and 27 years as an officer.
His last position before retirement was as command inspector stationed at Quantico.
At Virginia Tech, he will work with a cadet corps that has 420 members.
This year, the corps reached a record high in its percentage of women members with 71, or 16.9 percent of the enrollment.
The incoming freshman class of 198 has 34 women.
Fox won his Medal of Honor as a company commander in Vietnam. His company was attacked by a large, well-concealed enemy force, which wounded Fox and other members under his command.
He also served as an adviser to the South Vietnam Marine Corps during that conflict.
In addition to that medal, Fox also has received the Bronze Star medal, four Purple Hearts, the Joint Commendation Medal and other awards.
Fox's other positions in the Marine Corps included commanding a battalion at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and being commanding officer of the Officer Candidate School at Quantico.
He entered the Marine Corps in 1950 as a recruit at Parris Island, S.C., and served in the 1st Marine Division in Korea as an infantry rifleman.
The corps at Tech is headed by Maj. Gen. Stanton Musser.
