The display, the result of a four-year investigation by recent Radford High School graduate Kass Kastning, depicts the origins of Grand Caverns and other nearby caves in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
Kastning's study has received 55 awards in local, regional, state, national and international science-fair competitions and at professional scientific meetings. His continuing research emphasizes the nature of ground-water flow in limestone, the age of the caves, and the rate of land erosion in the Central Atlantic region over the last 1 million years.
Among other things, the exhibit attempts to show how easily water and pollutants can travel in cavernous rock.
The exhibit, in the shop's hallway showcase, includes photographs, color diagrams, models, rock samples and several of the awards it has won in competition.
It will remain at the shop until late this month.
Kastning will attend James Madison University in the fall.
