During a public hearing, council will receive comments on Full Gospel Grace Tabernacle's request for permission to build a sanctuary and parking lot on its Noblin Street property. Council is set to vote to approve or deny the request later in the meeting.
The Planning Commission unanimously recommended in July that council approve the request from Full Gospel Grace Tabernacle.
Council also is expected to set a date for a public hearing on a request by the Radford congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses to build a Kingdom Hall on a three-acre tract it owns between Tyler Square Shopping Center and Grove United Methodist Church on Tyler Avenue. The congregation's request also includes a 51-space parking lot. The hearing could come as soon as Sept. 13.
At its Aug. 16 meeting, the Planning Commission recommended that council approve a special-use permit for the Jehovah's Witnesses. The vote was 5-2.
In other matters, council will consider the first reading of a cross-connection and backflow-prevention program and ordinance for the city's water system.
The city already has been cited by the state Health Department for not having the cross-connection program in place. It's designed to keep contaminants from entering the public water supply from customer service connections. These can occur through backflow from customer devices or equipment.
Council also will be asked to appropriate money to buy a new service vehicle for the volunteer fire chief. City Manager Robert Asbury has recommended purchase of a GMC Yukon from New River Pontiac in Christiansburg for $21,880.
Council meets Monday at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers at the Municipal Building, 619 Second St.
