MEN PLEAD GUILTY TO STEALING RELICS

Two watermen pleaded guilty Friday to using clam tongs to pull artifacts and wood planks from Civil War ships in the James River.

Eugene G. Christman Jr. of Newport News and Joseph R. Hastings Jr. of Poquoson said they scavenged two ships off Newport News during the late 1980s and early 1990 in violation of the federal Archaeological Resource Protection Act.

They each face up to two years in prison and $250,000 in fines. They are scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 5 in U.S. District Court.
