NS TRAIN HITS CAR, KILLS WYTHE DRIVER

A Wythe County man was killed Saturday when a Norfolk Southern train struck his car broadside.

Matthew Brian King, 19, of Rural Retreat was dead at the scene.

State Trooper L.F. Valley said the accident happened at 9:15 a.m. at an unmarked railroad crossing on Virginia 616 just south of Virginia 675 in the town of Rural Retreat.

He said King apparently didn't see the oncoming train which hit his car as he crossed the tracks. The train dragged the car six-tenths of a mile before it could stop.

There were no witnesses to the accident.

Valley said the train was traveling 40 to 43 mph in an area where the limit is 45 mph.
