SINGER CROWNED SENIOR QUEEN

Polly Beck, 62, of Richmond on Saturday was crowned the first Ms. Virginia Senior Citizen at ceremonies at the Roanoke Airport Sheraton Inn.

First runner-up among the 13 contestants was Virginia Ann Freeman, 73, of Fredericksburg. Second runner-up was Elaine "Lee" Tompkins, 85, of Salem, who also won an award as oldest contestant. A talent award went to Edith Sawyers, 69, of Martinsville.

Beck sang "We Have this Moment Today," a song that she sang at her wedding. She enjoys baseball and swimming, but music and singing are her real joys. In response to her interview question, she said that she would go back to the '40s and '50s for music if she could. She said that this was one of the most thrilling events of her life.

She'll represent Virginia in the national pageant in Joliet, Ill., in October.
