Tony McGuire, driving a Lumina, overtook Randy Smith, in a Thunderbird, and won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature of the B-99.9 300 at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night.
The victory enabled McGuire to tie Dudley Lawhorn and Rick Sigmon for the division lead with five victories this season. It left him sixth in the points standings.
McGuire qualified with the fastest time and started on the pole, but on the first turn he conceded the lead to Smith, who started on the outside of the front row.
A half-lap ahead of the pack, Smith and McGuire raced nearly nose to tail for the first 79 laps, before McGuire moved under Smith and took the advantage. Caution flags on the 85th and 96th laps gave Smith two opportunities to close the gap, but he was unable to take the lead.
"Randy did a superb job early in the race," McGuire said. "I thought I was a touch quicker than he was all night, but he kept me pinched down every time I tried to pass him.
"That's a good car, though, and they've got a good team. They're going to win some races here before the year's over."
Lawhorn, the LMSC points leader and the Aug. 14 winner, was third. Tony McGuire's brother Tim placed fourth, and Harvey Harrison was fifth.
In the prelude, Jimmy Mullins won the Street Stock competition for the fifth time in six weeks. Although Mullins did not begin racing at FCS this year until the second half of the season, he has moved into ninth place in points.
Points leader Phillip VanDerVeer finished second, overtaking three-time winner Kenny Wagner on the final two laps. Mike Dudley rallied to finish third.
Mini Stock points leader Steve Lynch passed front-runner Steve Lam on the 13th lap and won their race. Lam, ninth in points, edged John Hall for second place. Pole-sitter Tommy Dean dropped out of the race on the 10th lap when his engine quit.
In the Pure Stock division, points leader R.W. Lawhorn qualified one-hundredth of a second behind last week's winner, Mike Owens, but took the lead - and the race - when Owens lost a wheel on the third lap. Kevin Ransom and Ed Underwood finished second and third, respectively.
