SPORTS LOBBY FOR INCLUSION IN ATLANTA

Beach volleyball and women's soccer appear close to winning approval as Olympic sports for the 1996 Games to be held in Atlanta.

One new sport, women's softball, already has been approved for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and there is a strong probability two more will be approved when the International Olympic Committee meets next month in Monte Carlo.

Bob Brennan, press chief for the Atlanta Games, acknowledged the two sports most often mentioned are beach volleyball and women's soccer. Both have the advantage of belonging to sports federations already represented at the Olympics; hence they would not fall into the category of new sports. "Neither would require adding another sport," Brennan pointed out.

A longshot for Atlanta but a better than 50-50 bet for the Games of 2000, is the triathlon.
