LOCAL TEAMS WIN TENNIS TOURNAMENTS

The Roanoke Hot Shots won the USTA 4.0 Mid-Atlantic Sectional tennis tournament championship at Wintergreen resort Sunday and advanced to the national tournament Oct. 8-10 in Palm Springs, Calif.

Roanoke defeated Maryland 3-2, including two doubles matches victories. Sue Colbourne won a singles match, and doubles matches were won by Lynn Snead and Wendela Barham and Kathy O'Keefe and Eva Guertler.

In the men's 3.5 competition, the Roanoke team defeated a Maryland team 3-2.

Winners for the Roanoke team were Clay Agee and Dan Cullather at No. 1 doubles, Mel Fiel and Dick Hough at No. 2 doubles and Ray Lingle and Joe Wheby at No. 3 doubles. They advance to national competition in October in Tucson, Arizona.

In other news in the region:

Ron Glowczynski placed second in the 19 kilometer sport cross country mountain bike race at the first annual "Spokes on Slopes" event at Winterplace, W.Va.

Glowczynski, who competes for East Coasters Cycling and Fitness, also was fourth in all categories in the dual downhill slalom.

Also for the East Coasters, John Corliss was seventh in the 25 kilometer expert race and Tom Layer was first in the 13 kilometer beginner field.
