OBIT GREER, ELLA IRENE HASH

GREER, Ella Irene Hash, 85, of Marion, died Saturday, August 21, 1993, in Smyth County Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness. She was born May 10, 1908, in Harlowtown, Montana. She was one of the eight children of Lee Hash and Carrie Young Hash, who moved to Montana from Grayson County, Virginia after their marriage in 1893. Her parents were merchants and ranchers, and Ella and her sisters and brothers grew up in the atmosphere of the Old West. After graduation from Harlowtown High School, in the early depression days, Ella worked for some time at a gold mining camp in Mamouth, Montana. Later, she found employment in Texas, where she attended Texas Tech. For some time, she was employed in Santa Barbara, California, where her sister and brother-in-law owned and operated a riding academy and provided horses for the Hollywood Studios. While in California, she attended the Santa Barbara Business School. In the early 1940's, Ella came to Virginia to visit relatives, and she decided to make Virginia her home. With her talent and flair for style, she became a buyer for stores in Baltimore, Wytheville, and Galax. In 1947, she married Roger Greer, and they established their home in Marion. Lively and energetic, with an abounding love for people, Ella always found time for community service in addition to her full time career. For 28 years, she was a devoted Red Cross Volunteer worker, for which she received special recognition. Ella was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, where she and her husband were faithful in attendance until his illness limited their activities. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Roger Greer of Marion; one sister, Hazel Wasp of Bozeman, Montana; one brother, Robert Hash of Bozeman, Montana; several nieces; nephews; many cousins; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 24, at 11 a.m., at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Dr. J. N. Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 115 South Church Street, Marion, Va. 24354, in her memory. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
