ONE CHURCH EXPANSION OK'D; ANOTHER'S REQUEST TO BE HEARD

City Council approved a special-use permit request for one church and set a hearing date for another at its Monday night meeting.

Council voted unanimously to grant permission to Full Gospel Grace Tabernacle's request to build a sanctuary and parking lot on its Noblin Street property.

A public hearing held at the council meeting had no speakers for or against the request.

Council also approved a motion to hold a public hearing Sept. 13 for a request by the Radford congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses to build a Kingdom Hall on a three-acre tract it owns between Tyler Square Shopping Center and Grove United Methodist Church on Tyler Avenue.

The congregation's request also includes a 51-space parking lot.

At its Aug. 16 meeting, the city's Planning Commission recommended by a 5-2 vote that City Council approve the special-use permit.

In other matters, council approved the purchase of a vehicle for the Fire Department at a cost of $21,880 from New River Pontiac in Christiansburg.

Council also approved the first reading of a new cross-connection and backflow-prevention program and ordinance for the city's water system.

The city already has been cited by the state Health Department for not having the program in place. It's designed to keep contaminants from entering the public water supply via customer service connections through cross-connections or backflow from customer devices or equipment.

A second reading will be held Sept. 13.
