COAL COMPANY FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST UMW

A coal company accused the United Mine Workers union Tuesday of creating "a racially hostile and threatening environment" for company employees.

Eastern Associated Coal Corp. filed a complaint with the state Human Rights Commission.

The company, a subsidiary of Peabody Holding Co. of St. Louis, cited three incidents in the past three weeks and said it could substantiate the charges with videotapes.

The videotapes, recorded by coal company security cameras, "reveal KKK-style cross burnings at or near UMWA picket shacks and the use of signs painted with racial epithets," Eastern Associated said. The company said the epithets were directed at black security guards.
