NO ACTION ON PLAN TO CLOSE BANKS

First Union National Bank of Virginia said Tuesday its directors have asked managers for more information before deciding whether to close Dominion Bank branches in Southeast Roanoke and at Smith Mountain Lake.

The board at its meeting Tuesday reached no decision about the closings, according to bank spokesman David Scanzoni. He said the new target date for a decision is Sept. 1.

The board asked management of First Union, which owns Dominion Bank, to re-examine the plan that had raised the possibility of abandoning the branches as unprofitable.

Civic groups and residents of neighborhoods served by the branches protested when the plans were made public. Residents of Southeast Roanoke also raised questions about the bank's compliance with the federal Community Reinvestment Act if it abandoned a branch in a low-income neighborhood.

Scanzoni said the board "directed management to look at a few more issues" related to the potential closings.
