MUSSER'S CONDITION IMPROVES

Roanoke City Councilman Howard Musser's condition has been upgraded to stable at Lewis-Gale Hospital, where he is recovering from a stroke.

Musser, who had been in guarded condition since he was admitted over the weekend, continues to improve, Councilman James Harvey said.

Hospital officials won't estimate how long he will be in the hospital, but Harvey said it might be two or three weeks.

Meanwhile, Musser, 63, has not decided whether to continue his campaign for commissioner of revenue.

His opponent, Marsha Fielder, said Tuesday she hopes Musser's health does not become an issue in the campaign.

"My thoughts go out to him and his family," she said. "I hope he has a quick recovery."

Fielder, a Democrat, said she has suspended her door-to-door campaigning since Musser's hospitalization.

Musser, a Democrat and councilman for 11 years, is running as an independent. He got into the race after Fielder beat David Anderson, deputy city treasurer, for the Democratic nomination.

The Republicans did not nominate a candidate.

Although Fielder said she doesn't want health to be an issue, she has promised to bring "new ideas and new energy" to the job at a time when localities are facing financial pressures.

Before Musser's stroke, she had said her energy would help ensure that the commissioner of revenue is responsive to the people.

If Musser drops out of the race, Fielder's election apparently would be assured unless there is a write-in candidate. The deadline for independent candidates to file was in June.
