JAMES D. FARRAR, W&L OFFICIAL, DIES

James DuBois Farrar, former dean of admissions at Washington & Lee University, died Tuesday. He was 67.

Farrar, who graduated with a degree in English literature from W&L in 1949 , returned to the university three years later as assistant to the dean of students.

In 1962, he became associate dean of admissions. The next year, he was appointed associate dean of students and director of admissions, a position he held until 1978, when he designed the university's alumni admissions program.

He served as associate director of special programs from 1987 until his retirement in 1990.

Farrar, of Lexington, served on the board of directors for the First National Bank of Lexington and as director of the Rockbridge chapter of the Red Cross. He was also a longtime football official with the Virginia High School League.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Lexington Presbyterian Church. Lomax Funeral Home of Buena Vista is handling the arrangements.
