CANNONS HOLD OFF BUCS 5-3

A Salem rally in the ninth came up short and the Buccaneers lost the final game of their Carolina League series against the Prince William Cannons 5-3 Wednesday night.

With one out in the ninth and the Cannons leading 5-1, Salem first baseman Mike Brown's ground out to third scored Jeff Conger who led off with a single. Kevin Polcovich also scored in the ninth on a wild pitch by Andy Croghan.

The Cannons, who took two of three games from Salem, jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. The first three batters in the Cannons' lineup singled off Salem starter Michel LaPlante (3-2). Bo Gilliam's sacrifice fly to center scored leadoff hitter Carlton Fleming, Greg Erickson scored on a wild pitch and Tim Cooper singled to score Jorge Posada.

Posada also hit a one-out homer in the fifth to put Prince William up 4-1.

The Bucs scored one run in the fourth when Jeff Conger walked and eventually scored on Jon Farrell's fielder's choice.

Andy Pettitte (11-9) was the winner. Croghan worked the ninth for his seventh save.
