PARK TO GET NEW ACCESS ROAD

The Floyd County Memorial Park will get a new 1,400-foot access road, thanks to $64,000 from Virginia's Recreational Access Fund. The state Transportation Board approved the project last week.

The new road will run west from Virginia 8, just north of Floyd, to a proposed parking lot in the 50-acre park.

The park has two athletic fields, a volleyball court and a picnic shelter. Still under construction are a walking trail, concession stand and rest rooms.

Plans also call for an amphitheater and a children's playground.

Once it's built, the access road will be designated a "Virginia Byway."
