HURT PARK NEIGHBORHOOD REUNION SET

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Hurt Park Neighborhood Alliance is sponsoring a reunion and family day festival on Sept. 4.

The group's aim is to bring together former and current residents, businesses, members of community organizations and churches, friends and the public to celebrate Hurt Park's heritage.

A 10 a.m. parade will launch the event, followed by the festival in Perry Park from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. The parade will begin at the Hurt Park housing complex, go down Salem Avenue to 12th Street S.W., then into the park.

Entertainment and activities are geared to diverse tastes and ages. There will be games for senior citizens, a teen dance, face painting, logo contest, raffles and food.

A basketball tournament, featuring one-on-one and three-on-three competition, will be open to five age groups, ranging from 8 to 17. Participants must register by 5 p.m. Sept. 3 by calling Mike Franklin at 345-8948.

Entertainment will include Image, the West End Center Chorus, dick jockeys from WTOY Radio, and Deanna McGhee Morgan, Much Too Much, and Ready and Willing, the Roanoke Valley winners who have qualified for the nationally televised show "Apollo."

Interested vendors should call Martha Ogden at 344-4514. For more information about the festival, call Ogden, or Cynthia Bryant at 344-1256.
