Women's distance run is set for Saturday

The Women's Distance Festival 5K Run will be held Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

The event, sponsored by the Star City Striders Running Club, is held annually to promote fitness and health for women in the Roanoke Valley.

Race-day registration is from 7 to 8 a.m. at the footbridge on Wiley Drive. Participants also may call 966-RUNN for an application.

State fraternal order honors area members

The Virginia State Association of the Order of DeMolay recently honored members from the Roanoke Valley chapter of the fraternal order.

Christopher L. Pendleton was elected state master councilor of the fraternal order and was the Flower Talk competition winner.

Matthew Ladenheim won the Ceremony of Lights competition, Jason Akers received the State Representative DeMolay award and John Critzer received a $1000 scholarship.

Pendleton, Critzer, Akers and Shep Critzer divided a $2600 scholarship.

The Order of DeMolay is an international fraternal order for young men ages 13 to 21. The local chapter is sponsored by the 22nd Masonic District.

Literacy Volunteers seek tutors for adults

The Literacy Volunteers of America is seeking volunteers to work in the Roanoke public schools' Adult Basic Education classroom.

Volunteers will be tutoring adults who are enrolled in adult basic-education classes.

Training will be provided for volunteers.
