3 AREA TEAMS KICK OFF PREP FOOTBALL SEASON

Three Timesland teams open the high school football season this weekend, and seven others are scheduled to participate in one of the area's most popular preseason jamborees Saturday.

New River District member Carroll County visits Grundy for a non-district game between two Group AA squads at 8 p.m. today. Bland, of the Mountain Empire District, is at Holston for a 7:30 p.m. game.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Roanoke Catholic entertains Brunswick Academy at Victory Stadium in a game between two private schools. The Celtics will be opening their second season under coach John Cooke. After losing its first six games a year ago, Roanoke Catholic won its final two.

Also set for Saturday is the Hudson TD Classic in Dublin. The action starts at 2 p.m., when Cave Spring takes on Abingdon, the only non-Timesland team in the event.

There will be eight halves of football at the jamboree. In afternoon action, Radford meets Salem at 2:50 p.m., William Fleming battles Blacksburg at 3:40 p.m. and host Pulaski County meets Christiansburg at 4:30 p.m.

At 5:30 p.m., representatives of each team will compete in throwing, kicking and running.

Radford plays Abingdon at 6:30 to begin the second half of the jamboree. In action to follow, Cave Spring and Christiansburg meet at 7:20 p.m., Fleming faces Salem at 8:10 p.m. and Pulaski County takes on Blacksburg at 9 p.m.
