BULLPEN FAILS BUCS, 6-1

A one-run lead rarely is a safe one in the sixth inning of a Carolina League baseball game. It is particularly tenuous when the Salem Buccaneers' bullpen is asked to protect the margin.

Bucs starter Eric Parkinson left three men on base when he left Thursday night's game against Lynchburg. Two of the runners scored off reliever Mark Mesewicz, and the Red Sox added four in the eighth as Lynchburg went on to a 6-1 victory.

Bob Juday led off the sixth for the Red Sox with a single off Parkinson (2-7). One out later, Bill Selby singled to put runners at first and second. After Felix Colon walked to load the bases, Mesewicz took over for Parkinson. Mesewicz nearly got out of the jam, striking out John Eierman, but Doug Hecker singled to center as Juday and Selby scored.

Eierman and Colon had run-scoring singles in the eighth, and George Scott capped the rally against Mark Pisciotta with a two-run single to right.

Salem had taken the lead when Angelo Encarnacion doubled to drive in Chance Sanford in the second inning.

Scott Bakkum (12-11) pitched a complete game for the Red Sox. The right-hander gave up six hits, walked two and struck out eight.

The teams meet again at 7:05 tonight, with the Bucs' Sean Lawrence (0-2) and Lynchburg's Jeff Faino (5-2) scheduled to start in matchup of left-handers. \
