UNITED CHRISTIAN AID ACCEPTING USED CLOTHING FOR NEEDY KIDS

Here's a suggestion for what to do with those school clothes your kids have outgrown over the summer:

\ CHRISTIANSBURG UNITED CHRISTIAN AID is seeking children's clothing for needy Montgomery County school-agers, kindergarten through high school. The clothing bank serves youngsters in public schools outside Blacksburg (which has its own clothing bank).

It especially needs cool-weather jackets, jeans and tops in smaller sizes and husky sizes.

Donate outgrown clothing in good condition, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 220 W. Main St., next to Duncan's Texaco. Go in the covered side door and down one flight. Place clothing in the box next to the stairs.

New clothing and cash donations also are welcome. Send donations to Osie Sowder, 945 W. Main St., Christiansburg 24073.

The clothing bank also needs additional shelves.

Christiansburg United Christian Aid is all-volunteer and gets no government or United Way money. For more information, call Alice Alley, 382-3071.

\ FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST), 524 N. Jefferson St., Pulaski, will observe the 112th anniversary of its founding with a homecoming celebration this weekend. A picnic today at 4 p.m. will start the celebration.

Sunday, after Sunday school at 9:45 a.m., the Rev. Steven G. Scott - who entered the ministry from the church - will preach at 11 a.m. A sandwich lunch will follow in the fellowship hall.

\ HOMECOMING celebrations also are set at these area churches:

Belview United Methodist Church, 3619 Onyx Drive, Christiansburg, will celebrate its 20th anniversary Sunday. Sunday school is at 10 a.m., worship at 11 and lunch and other activities to follow. Pastor Larry Mann will speak.

Belview was built after the New River and Pineview United Methodist charges merged and decided to build a new church between the two existing churches. The Rev. Earl Phlegar held the first service at the new church in September, 1973.

\ The FLOYD PARISH UNITED METHODIST CHARGE is holding its "Heritage Weekend" through Sunday. On the schedule:

The WFNR bluegrass and gospel benefit concert is today, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., in Bissett Park, Radford. The Blackburn Brothers, the Gold Hill Band, Gospel Strings and The Sounds of Harmony are among those on the schedule. Proceeds from a guitar raffle will go to the American Heart Association.

The Silver Star from North Carolina will sing at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Rock Road, Radford tonight at 6.

\ COPPER HILL CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN's music committee plans a fifth-Sunday singing program Sunday at 7 p.m. Groups and solos are welcome to perform.

\ BIBLE SCHOOL, sponsored by Anath Baptist Church, 3995 Roanoke St., at the top of Christiansburg Mountain, will run Monday through Friday, 6:30-8:30 each evening. The theme will be "God's Astronauts," with classes for all ages. Call the Rev. Sam Hancock, 552-1639, for more information.

\ The annual CROP WALK in Radford is set for Oct. 17. Each year, communities throughout the country walk to raise money to help alleviate world hunger through Church World Service programs by getting pledges throughout the community.

Twenty-five percent of the money raised will be divided among the Women's Resource Center, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread and the Radford Food Pantry.

The Radford CROP walk, sponsored by the Radford-Fairlawn Ministerial Association, will be a 6.2-mile hike. It will start Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. from the Dedmon Center at Radford University.

\ ST. JUDE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7318 Peppers Ferry Road, Fairlawn, celebrates Sunday Mass at 11 a.m. The Saturday evening Mass will continue to be at 5:15.

\ LUTHER MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH has returned to its normal schedule, with worship services Sundays at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Holy Communion is celebrated weekly at the 11 a.m. service. Call 951-1000.

\ MAIN STREET BAPTIST CHURCH in Christiansburg has a new youth center. The church has renovated the two-story house between the church and the Kroger supermarket. The building - which the church owns - formerly was occupied by the Chamber of Commerce.

Youth Director Tip Brown said over two dozen volunteers from the church have been working to get it into shape. A "back-to-school bash" was held Friday night.

Brown said the church's youth programs have outgrown the existing facilities. He said the new youth center will be headquarters for the church's Second Wind program each Wednesday, 7-9 p.m., starting Sept. 8. Sunday school classes also will be held there 9:45-11 a.m.

\ BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP will study the Gospel of Matthew this year. A daytime group will meet Wednesdays, starting Sept. 15, 9:10-10:15 a.m., at First Wesleyan Church, Giles Road, Blacksburg. There's also a program for pre-school children (two to five years old) of class members. Please register children before they attend.

An evening Bible Study Fellowship class will meet Mondays starting Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m., at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, Church Street. There is no children's class.

\ The WILLING WORKERS class at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren will meet Sept. 18, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Activities will include an auction at noon, a food and bake sale, crafts, apple butter making, and musical entertainment all day long.

\ Church names in the news:

The REV. GORDON WOOLARD is the new pastor at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 416 Alleghany St, Blacksburg. He succeeds the Rev. Don Clements. Most recently, Woolard worked in Brussels, Belgium, with a group called The International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, headquartered in London, which is perhaps better-known in the U.S. as the Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship. He hopes to continue his ministry with students in the New River Valley.

Woolard, 42, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and the Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa. He's married and the father of four.

He will be formally installed Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m., at the church.

\ The REV. JOEL P. WRIGHT has taken over as interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski. Wright, who's from Richmond, has just completed work on his doctorate degree at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. He has pastored churches in Iowa and California.

\ LAVELVA B. STEVENS, Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski, is among 1,000 voting members of the 1993 Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which will be meeting through Wednesday in Kansas City.

\ The REV. PAUL PINGLE has begun his ministry at the Floyd Parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, with congregations in Floyd and Willis. Pingle, 30, is a graduate of Georgia Tech and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. He succeeds the Rev. Richard Giessler, who retired.
