About 175 dead fish were found in the stream or on its banks Thursday after a heavy thunderstorm the previous night.
Several limestone plants are located along Big Stony Creek in Giles County, including one near the kill site.
So far, there is no evidence tracing the substance that killed the fish to any plant, said Neal Obenshain, regional director of the state Water Control Board.
Tests are continuing and the cause of the kill should be pinpointed next week, he said.
Big Stony Creek is popular for fishing and swimming, but the area of the fish kill was downstream from the section most often used for recreation, he said.
The incident posed no danger to residential water supplies, he said, adding that whatever caused the fish kill concentrated at the site without flowing downstream to the New River.
