Based on Victor Hugo's novel, ``Les Miserables'' is a saga that covers three stormy decades in 19th-century France. It tells of Jean Valjean's struggle to evade capture by the cruel Inspector Javert. The play has won 31 major awards, including the 1987 Tony Award for Best Musical and the London Critics Circle Award. It has been seen by an estimated 28 million people.
The music is by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. Titles include ``At the End of the Day,'' ``On My Own'' and ``Bring Him Home.''
At $4.2 million, the production is said to be one of the most costly Broadway shows ever to tour. It is one of three companies traveling to more than 100 U.S. cities.
Bob Chapman, civic center manager, says he expects the show to draw from a radius of 100 miles. Already, he said, his staff has received telephone inquiries from Winston-Salem, Greensboro and other places, though no official announcement of the performances had been made.
One performance of ``Les Miserables'' has been added to a mini-series of Broadway plays promoted by Mike Forst of Charlotte, N.C. The series also will feature ``Oklahoma!'' on Jan. 4 and ``Man of La Mancha'' on Feb. 23.
