PARKWAY TRAFFIC DEATHS BLAMED ON SPEEDING, UNFAMILIARITY WITH ROAD

Speeding and unfamiliarity with mountain roads are to blame for most of the fatal accidents on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, officials say.

In the past two weeks, four people have died after losing control of their motorcycles or pickup trucks along the winding, three-state mountain route.

That brings the number of people killed on the parkway in August to five. Fifteen motorists have wrecked since Aug. 7, The Charlotte Observer reported.

On Aug. 21, a Candler, N.C., man on a motorcycle lost control of the bike near Graveyard Field, 25 miles south of Asheville, and was found dead at the bottom of a mountain gorge.

In another fatal accident in the southern Virginia section of the parkway in mid-August, a Charlottesville man in a pickup truck went over a cliff and fell 25 feet to his death. - Associated Press
